Richard L. Harvey, MD, FACS
Dr. Harvey is a specialist in cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery at Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons—Gwinnett Medical Group.
After Dr. Harvey obtained his bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College, he felt led to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where an illness and life-saving surgery triggered his decision to pursue a career in medicine. He returned to the Magnolia State and earned his doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in 1992.
Dr. Harvey completed his internship and general surgery residency in Macon at the Mercer University School of Medicine, where he earned the Chief’s Intern of the Year award and was named chief administrative resident. He then completed his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Mississippi.
From there, the surgeon and his family found a home in Macon, where he taught at Mercer University while working at the Macon CardioVascular Institute, where he was known as the group’s heart valve specialist. He also served in many areas of leadership at the Medical Center of Central Georgia during his time there.
Dr. Harvey is a Diplomat of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, as well as a member of the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society. He is a sought-after author and presenter and a welcome complement to David A. Langford, MD, at the Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgeons—Gwinnett Medical Group.
